Most of the live photos were taken at De Koornbeurs. We never saw photos of gigs at De Blauwe Aanslag & The Confusion The Hague, Speakers Delft, De Tom Tom Heythuisen, I.O. Festival, D.S.B, Unitas/Radio Dalux FM, anywhere... (Don't hesitate to contact us if you have additional material!) |
An early shot of The Napoleons in the 'beat cellar' of OJV De
Koornbeurs, Joke with Coral Deluxe bass and Union Jack dress, Rixk wearing a striking red
tie, and Eric playing his battered Egmond guitar. Drum kit held together with some
strategically placed chairs; a borrowed bass amp mid stage - although the band prefers
playing their own Vox gear they also say "it's not the gear that does the trick, any
old amp will do". This evening was organised by Ruben who didn't want to wait for
another Napoleons concert to go to and therefore organised one himself. Way to go! More from this evening here. |
A concert remembered very well: Open Air '98... It was too
hot for Joke to go on stage barefoot (her m.o. back then), Rixk was drowning in
sweat, and Eric was jumping off stage during a guitar solo, walking into the
'Gall&Gall' liquor store opposite the stage (using three connected guitar leads),
buying a cold beer while playing and returning to the stage playing slide with
the bottle. An old trick, that bottle/slide thing - but efficient and appropriate under
the circumstances. The shop keeper was quite, quite amazed. More shots from this hot Open Air here. |
Promotional photos: it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it.
In fact Rixk doesn't seem to mind, Joke hates it vehemently, and Eric always pushes for
photos to be taken - for sleeves and things. Anyway, the one on the left ended up on the EP's sleeve... but there were some more taken then! Just have a look... |
Another gig people will remeber - if not for the Napoleons then most certainly for the headlining band... because the Napoleons opened for Dead Moon (whose Tombstone label had released the 'In Sound Shape' EP earlier). Joke here plays a custom-made plywood 'teardrop'-shape bass covered in fake fur, with a huge, heavy, cool Fender Telecaster bass pickup and a Rickenbacker type bridge/tailpiece. The PA crew were very happy that the Napoleons used their own Vox setup because they were having enough problems with their equipment as it was... A couple of photos from that night here. |
OK these photos were taken after a recording session and things
got a bit out of hand. Things ended in a beer-drenched haze of blowing bubbles, group
hugs, naked bellies and dropping pants... Needless to say it's a relief to the band that
most of the photos are a bit unsharp too. However there's a couple of pictures worth seeing here! |
A gig at Catena in Leiden where the venue had 'transparency' as a
theme for the night. The Napoleons showed their flexibility performing behind a
see-through curtain, wearing some see-through garments, and bringing along a striptease
dancer: Nicoline, who would also accompany the band at their appearance at the I.O.
Festival (anyone got photos from that one please...?). A photo of Nicoline is also on the inner sleeve of the Tombstone EP! Here are some revealing shots... |
Same place as the Open Air festival, other occasion and no fancy
suits; Rixk plays on a drum kit other than his own, Eric plays his 'puinbak' home grown
guitar built from Teisco, Egmond, Danelectro and Framus leftovers, and Joke now has
abandoned the Union Jack dress as a stage outfit altogether. Meanwhile the hair keeps
growing and the beer keeps flowing. Here's a handful of photos. |
Time for some more photos, this time with the battle cry
"let's take some photos with Hans' car": a cool Opel Ascona! So Hans
risked a couple of tickets for parking illegally, and innocent bystanders saw The
Napoleons dressed up as a girl racer with her crew of mechanics. Want to see how Joke
climbed up that car in a tight skirt? Take a look! |
And finally some more photos you might like... like Nicoline here
on the left, personal pics from the band etc, whatever we thought to be of any interest
for those who ploughed their way through the above. Here you go then... |
